I never knew much about pearls; however, this book provides awesome details about pearls, their history, and myths/legends about them. If you're interested in pearls or just grew a vast interest in pearls, definitely read this book.
Short yet sweet, this book contains some valuable information about pearls. I like how it gave an informative overview of the history of pearls. If you are looking to shop for pearls, this is a great resource to start with, and will explain the important ways to differentiate the quality of your pearl. The author gave some interesting information regarding Akoya, Tahitian, and Fresh Water pearls. If you are looking to maintain the beauty of your pearls, there is a helpful section on how to care for your pearls. This book is a good read for those looking to purchase and collect pearls!
When buying a diamond most will research colors, shapes and grades and pay a price accordingly. Pearls, however, are different. Perhaps because they are more plentiful or more delicate, perhaps because we live in a world that takes less time to appreciate the beauty of things less expensive, or perhaps because so many traditions have faded, pearls are generally not given the same attention as diamonds. They may be bought merely for their color and shape, or for the ways they enhance the beauty of gems, but far less often are they considered important enough to truly understand. Fleury Sommers, however understands that pearls are as lovely as diamonds, and while she does not set out to convince us of that fact, her book, Fast Facts About Pearls, plainly illustrates why these beautiful pieces of natural art deserve our attention.
Written for the layperson - anyone who doesn't know a lot about pearls - this book gives a history about the pearl industry globally, an overview of traditions in the use of pearls, and plentiful, clear information about the types, shapes, colors, textures and attributes. It explains grading systems and trade terms. It suggests how to wear them and how to care for them. It carefully, without lecture or presumption, uses all these facts to show us why these beauties from the water should be appreciated. It inspires.
I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about buying pearls and I would recommend it to anyone using pearls to create jewelry. Having read it, you will know what to look for and what to buy. You will also come to appreciate that pearls really are as lovely as diamonds.
Thorough and interesting book about pearl categories, quality factors, and grading. I especially enjoyed the history behind the different types of pearls and production techniques. It was particularly interesting to learn about the evolution of freshwater pearls in China, as well as the history of Mikimoto pearls. There many excellent tips in this book, including how to detect if a pearl has been treated, as well as getting a GIA report when purchasing expensive pearls. There were numerous recommendations for caring for pearls that I was not aware of. I also enjoyed the folklore and fun facts around the history and modern day uses of the pearl. Great information and entertaining.
